We are advertising an open call out for creatives in all aspects of art and design, including and not limited to; photography, film, spoken word, 2D and 3D disciplinarians, graphics, sound and journalism. We aim to create an exhibition of five different forms of documentation, that have become works in themselves by using our performance as a catalyst. Within this project we are looking specifically how and why artists choose to document and archive their work, with particular interest in performance as it often requires a documentative format to run alongside the live work as a form of preservation.

ARTURN Collective are a female collaborative duo that aim to challenge the boundaries of socially concerned art practice simultaneously with deconstructing the ideas of contemporary curation. We aim to produce artist-curated exhibitions based on collaborations between mediums, ideas and approaches to contemporary art with an aim to understand the wider social context of our position in the current art environment.

Our current project focuses primary on how we archive and document work with an emphasis on performance art. We have developed a performance work that examines the role of spirituality and transformative experiences in contemporary art as well as expanding the notions of spatial awareness and time frames in art work. Inspired by artists such as Allan Kaprow  and his idea of happenings, we have planned to conduct five separate performances in the following places; Ilkley Moore, Leeds City Centre, Pen-y-Ghent (in the Yorkshire Dales), a derelict building in the outskirts of Leeds City Centre and in Meanwood Park. These places all required a different type of journey to be made to encounter the space, which builds on the context of our work.

The next stage of our work is the role of the documenter, we want to take this role away from ourselves so we become the object of our performance rather than distracting from the intensity of the work by having to consider the ways in which it will be documented. Instead we have created an idea that requires five creatives, each with a different skill set to make a piece of work based on the role of documenting our performance. Influenced by the seminal performance piece by Stuart Brisley ‘Moments of Decision/Indecision’ 1975, he passes on the responsibility of a photographer to document the performance in moments of decision which juxtaposes with his performance whereby he tries to push paint around with his body that then become the ‘Moments of Indecision’.
