Bankley Open is back! Our annual Open Call invites submissions from artists working in any discipline. Approximately 20 artists will be chosen by a panel of judges to exhibit in the Bankley Open exhibition opening September 2021. The judges will also choose a first prize winner of £700 and a solo show at Bankley. The second prize is £200, as well as a Visitor’s Choice Prize. Selection & Judging Panel: Tamar Hemmes: Assistant Curator at Tate Liverpool, Simon Buckley: Artist, and Audrey Albert: Artist and Creative Facilitator.

The Bankley Open Exhibition opening night and award ceremony will take place on Friday 24th September 2021, 6-9pm, which will also coincide with our Annual Open Studios. The exhibition will continue to run every Saturday from 12pm to 4pm until 10th October.

The 1st prize winner of Bankley Open 2021 will have the opportunity to develop their solo exhibition with the curators at Bankley Studios + Gallery, with a £200 production fee, as well as  £500 prize money.

ENTRY GUIDELINES

Each artist can submit up to TWO artworks, with a brief description of each piece. Please also include information on the medium, year and size. 

Bankley Studios + Gallery is not publicly funded and is run by volunteers. There is a one off entry fee for all artists of £10 payable via Paypal, however if preferred a bank transfer can be arranged, please contact us for further details. Please pay via the Paypal link below (let us know if there is any discrepancy between your Artist and Paypal name).

Bankley Studios + Gallery will not take a commission from the sale of any artwork during the exhibition.

KEY DATES

Submission deadline: 25th July 2021 (midnight) 

Notification of selection: by 2nd August 2021

Delivery of exhibiting artworks: 10th, 11th & 12th September 2021, 12 - 4pm (times tbc) 

Exhibition opening night and awards ceremony: 24th September 2021, 6-9pm

Exhibition running: 25th September - 10th October

Collection of exhibiting artworks: 17th and 18th October between 12-4pm, or by arrangement

Unfortunately, we do not have storage so are unable to keep artworks beyond this date

Terms & Conditions

By submitting this application, applicants are agreeing to the conditions of entry, as listed below, including:

  • By entering Bankley Open 2021, Artists are agreeing that their work will be available for the dates stated in the application form. 

  • Artists take full responsibility for the delivery and shipping of any selected work(s).

  • Artists are hereby agreeing to allow Bankley Studios + Gallery to use an image of their artwork on publicity associated with Bankley Open 2021, unless otherwise arranged.

  • Artists must also guarantee that by submitting the work they are of their own origination, and that they hold all moral and intellectual property rights in that work.

  • Artwork can be for sale, and Bankley Studios + Gallery do not charge commission.

  • Bankley Studios & Gallery are not liable for any loss or damage incurred to the artwork if shortlisted and exhibited, and advises all artists to seek their own insurance.

  • All proceeds from the Bankley Open 2021 are used for the prizes, promotion and exhibition of the competition. Any additional funds are donated to Bankley Studios + Gallery for the continuation of the programme of exhibitions. 

  • Whilst the judges have been selected and have agreed to take part in selecting work for Bankley Open 2021 and awarding the prizes, under exceptional circumstances Bankley Studios + Gallery hold the right to adjust the line-up at any time throughout the Open Call.

  • 2D submissions: Please ensure that all wall-mounted artworks are ready to be hung and install descriptions are provided.

  • 3D/ 4D submissions: any sculpture/installation/video/projection requirements must be made by arrangement.

How much does it cost?
A one-off fee of £10 to enter up to 2 artworks
Are there payments to artists?
Bankley Open does not offer a fee to artists, however we will not take any commission on any works sold. If you have any issues with this, please do let us know
Is there a private view / opening?
Yes, the show will have an opening night on Friday 24th September, which is when the judges will announce the prize winners
What are the exhibition opening hours?
25th September - 10th October, exact times and dates TBC
Does the location have disabled access?
Unfortunately Bankley Gallery is on the first floor of an old mill building, and only has a goods lift functioning which is currently unsuitable for use by people. Hopefully we will be able to change that in the near future, but currently the gallery is only accessible by a flight of stairs
Do I need to be present?
No, but it would be lovely if you were able to attend the Opening Night
How do you decide on proposals?
Our 3 judges will meet together and select successful applicants. How they decide to do this will be up to them, they may each pick their favourites and include them all, or they may try to curate their selection in a more balanced way
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
We will notify you by 2nd August, and then we will make arrangements for the delivery of your work
