Chair of Trustees
Deadline: 02/09/2016Country: United Kingdom | Gill Park
Pavilion is currently looking to recruit a new Chair to help the team realise its ambitious programme and fundraising plans over the next three years.
Established in 1983, Pavilion was founded as the UK’s first feminist photography centre. Now in its 33rd year, the organisation is committed to the production and presentation of critically-engaged contemporary art. With an office base at the University of Leeds, Pavilion’s work materialises across diverse sites and locations, in Leeds and beyond. We work in partnership with galleries, museums, cinemas and community groups to programme regular screenings, talks, workshops, commissions and exhibitions. Pavilion strives to produce high quality new work that is rooted in our local place and has international reach. In recent years we have worked with artists including Lucy Skaer, Hito Steyerl, Melvin Moti, Celine Condorelli, Sarah Cole, Rehana Zaman and Harold Offeh. We work across community settings and in 2016-17 are working in partnership with local residents, single mothers and refugees and asylum seekers. Pavilion strives to maintain a mixed portfolio of funding that can support the depth and breadth of its activity. In 2016 we are delighted to have been awarded an Arts Council Catalyst Evolve grant in partnership with Iniva, which will support us to increase our income from private and philanthropic sources over the next there years. We are hopeful that our new Chair will help us deliver against this grant.
Pavilion is looking for a new Chair who will contribute to the vision, ambition and reach of the organisation. An enthusiasm for contemporary art is essential, as is an interest in work that takes place outside of the formal gallery space. We welcome applications from those with experience of running an arts organisation (large or small) as well as those working in Higher Education, a Local Authority or the Third Sector. An understanding of the funding challenges facing the arts sector and a creative approach to fundraising and development is desirable. Pavilion was founded with a commitment to challenging the exclusions of the visual art field, with a particular focus on providing opportunities for women, including black women and disabled women. In 2016 we are keen to ensure that diversity continues to be at the heart of our programme, in terms of addressing the politics of representation through the art we programme and produce as well as by removing our existing barriers to access and engagement. We would also like diversity to be embedded within our leadership and as such we are particularly welcoming of applicants from people of colour, people with disabilities and women.
The Pavilion Board of Trustees meets quarterly, usually on a Monday afternoon with the occasional additional commitment throughout the year. The role is unpaid, travel expenses are covered.
