Corridor8 (platform for contemporary art and writing in the North of England) and serf (an artist-led studios and project space in Leeds) invites proposals for an early-career writer to respond to the work of artist-curator William Noel Clarke.

Fee, inclusive of travel costs: £300

Application Deadline: Friday 3 February 2017

This Corridor8 residency opportunity, in partnership with serf artist studios and funded by Leeds Inspired, is intended to encourage critical and creative forms of art writing that depart from a review-style format and demonstrate the relevance of contemporary art (its production, display and reception) to wider issues and contexts. Based at serf, the writer-in-residence will have the opportunity to contribute to serf’s programme while working collaboratively with studio holder William Noel Clarke, whose practice revolves around research, pedagogy, performance and the curatorial.

The residency will coincide with Clarke’s 1-day ‘flash show’ in serf’s project space on 17 February, and a ‘serf School’ event on 14 February that will take the form of a studio based discussion and crit. During these two days, the writer will have use of a desk space and will meet with Clarke and other serf members. The piece of writing, approximately 1,200 words in length, will comment on Clarke’s practice within the context of serf and its collaborative ethos, and reflect the conversations that take place throughout the residency. The writing deadline is 24 February, with the final text published soon after on the Corridor8 website.

Applicants should submit:

• A short proposal outlining the approach to the residency and exhibition themes (max. 300 words)

• An example of writing (full text or excerpt up to 750 words)

• A CV

Applicants must be based in Leeds, at an early stage of their career and have a genuine interest in working closely with artists and editors to evolve their writing practice.

Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the candidate’s suitability to the residency and quality of writing. The selection panel comprises Lara Eggleton (Corridor8), William Noel Clarke, Melissa Burn and Adam Townend (serf).
