Opportunity to curate an exhibition that draws from your own work and our collection of prints, ceramics and textiles during Cambridge Open Studios July 2024.

The Keate Family Arts Trust houses a collection of C20 prints, ceramics and textiles with some more contemporary additions housed in the late founder's home in central Cambridge, along with some of their Hogweed collages. We invite visual artist to curate an exhibition of their own work in our space drawing on as much or as little of the collection as desired. The trust has joined Cambridge Open Studios (COS) and the Trustees hope that we can host an exhibition over all four weekends: 6th & 7th, 13th & 14th, 20th & 21st, 27th & 28th July.

We desire this to be a truly collaborative undertaking and will help in any way we can; with setting up and invigilating the exhibitions and serving refreshments. There is no cost to the artist.

We will accept offers up to the deadline, but we hope interested artists will take advantage of the opportunity to visit the house 18th and 19th March by arrangement.  Please send an expression of interest in the first instance; you can refine your submission at any time.

Please note that COS is open to all amateur and professional artists and makers and does not have a separate selection process but artists need to have their home and studio in Cambridgeshire or the CB post code area.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Any Cambridge based visual artist. Cambridge based is really important as this is a condition of entry to Cambridge Open Studios - 'COS is open to all amateur and professional artists and makers... Members need to have their home and studio in Cambridgeshire or the CB postcode area.'
How many works can I submit?
The invitation will be to curate your own exhibition within our space, so there may be spatial limitations on the number of works that can be shown, but we are not imposing a limit.
How much does it cost?
You might incur costs in the making and delivering work, but there is no cost for curating/exhibition, the Cambridge Open Studio fees have been covered.
Are there payments to artists?
No, but you are free to sell work.
Is there a private view / opening?
No, we will just be open over the four weekends.
What are the exhibition opening hours?
To be decided, but probably 11.00 - 17.00 each day.
Does the location have disabled access?
No, this is difficult.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Inclusion in the Cambridge Open Studios brochure.
Do I need to be present?
It would be nice if you were some of the time, but the trustees are happy to support.
How do you decide on proposals?
We would ask artists to register their interest. In an ideal world, this would be before the visiting opportunities on the 18th & 19th March and we can introduce the collection and the scope of the possibilities. The artists would then be able to refine their offer. The best fit for us would be someone who is keen to explore the interaction of their work and the collection.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
We will offer you arranged access to the house and give you the space to explore the collection and make decisions around the curation. We will give practical help; reframe and rehang pieces, including re-arranging and re-decorating as needed.
What kind of proposals are you looking for?
We have no preconceived ideas. Ours is a domestic setting, but work that challenges that is just as welcome as something cozy.
What are the selection criteria?
We will be drawn to artists that want to work with our collection and to show their work within and beside. Ours is not a 'white walled' gallery space, so will not lend itself very well to big bold statements, but rather to the intimate, in between things.
