*Dancing Girl Emoji*: An Exploration of Presentation and Representation Online
Deadline: 08/07/2016Venue: Backlit Gallery | City: Nottingham | Country: United Kingdom | Delta Sorority
In August 2016, Delta Sorority will be programming a series of public-facing events at Backlit Gallery, Nottingham. The programme will consider our collaborative research into the impact of the technological progression of communication and the rise of social media platforms, looking in depth at notions of the new-age narcissist, the digital facade, and the potential for emojis to facilitate transcultural communication. Through this open call, we are looking for artists to take part in a digital residency that will accompany the programme of events. Existing within a purpose-built website, the residency will provide artists with the opportunity to create and broadcast a new body of work.
The residency will move through seven phases, each lasting a period of 24 hours. At the beginning of each phase the digital space will begin anew; a void, white site that a selected artist will have complete control over in which to conduct their activity. Delta Sorority will launch the first phase of the residency and will be followed by six artists that will be selected through this open call. The residency and its resident artists will be promoted through Backlit Gallery and Delta Sorority. Following the programme, the digital residency and its outcomes will be archived on Delta Sorority’s website.
Although we welcome proposals from artists working in all media, we are particularly interested in those that work in performance, text, video, sound, animation, video game art, and GIF art. The proposals should hold a dialogue with the ideas central to the programme that it is accompanying: the implications of the progression of communication towards digital formats, and the use of social media platforms. Proposals that contain a live element will be particularly favourable, which might include a broadcasted live performance or work that presents a live process.
The dates of the digital residency are Friday 12th August - Friday 19th August, although these dates are subject to change slightly. Each selected artist will become the digital resident for a 24 hour period within this time frame.
Applications will be accepted until 12pm Friday 9th July.
