Open call to artists for submissions for a new week-long online residency taking place in February.

i o u a e is an arts organisation set up in Newcastle upon Tyne to support the practices of still studying, graduating and emerging artists. Our aim is to provide opportunities for collaboration, development and networking between artists and commission several projects a year.

You are invited to submit proposals for the inaugural online residency, inhabit. Looking at the type of spaces artists utilise, we ask that applicants approach the places they themselves occupy, whether a desktop, studio or workshop and open them up to viewers.

We believe making is a very physical process and often understanding how we create and what kind of environment we create in helps to gain a deeper understanding of our practices (and is also really interesting). Which spaces influence your making and why?

If you're a painter or sculptor how does your studio influence what you make? As a performer how does the space you occupy influence your actions and ideas? If your a digital artist how does your screen effect your outcomes?

There are no set expectations of what must be made in the week but we are looking for proposals that will generate lots of material and create a lively online presence.

The goal of the residency is to give the selected artist time to explore their methodology and to aid in further future making. Although we welcome proposals from artists working in all media, we do highlight this residency must take place online and via some social media. We ask all applicants to consider how well their work will translate into this format. We will favour proposals that detail how and why there practice is most suited to this type of virtual residency.

On Monday 30th of January the residency project will be kick started by i o u a e itself with a day long streaming of image, text and video as we begin to shortlist proposals from our own desktop. Our website will go live on this date.

The current online spaces you can utilise are listed below. If discussed in your proposal there is the ability to create and use other platforms such as Snapchat, Livestream and Website builders.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
All artists, duos and groups are welcome to apply. There are no restrictions.
When is the deadline?
January 29th 2017.
How many residencies will there be?
Depending on the quality of proposals and interest we receive the residency may be extended into a rolling weekly programme, so whilst the current opportunity is only for one artist/duo/group this could change after the submission period. The current residency dates are Friday 17th February – Friday 24th February, although these dates may be subject to change. The deadline is Sunday 29th January.
When is the residency date?
Friday 17th February - Friday 24th February (these dates could be subject to change). This allows for all submissions to be read and for i o u a e to discuss in more detail the proposal with the selected artist.
Are there payments to artists?
Unfortunately there is no fee available at this time.
Is there a private view / opening?
Truly dependent on the type of proposal you submit.
What are the residency opening hours?
The residency can fill as little or as much time as your proposal requires.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Of course.
How do you decide on proposals?
All proposals will be read and selected by i o u a e. The most interesting, thought through and engaging proposal will be selected. Prior experience or exhibitions are not more important then an excellent proposal.
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
Depending on the number of applications you will be contacted by the organisation in a week.
How would the work I made be used?
The work created and made over the week will be published on our upcoming website and will remain on any online platform it is posted to. By agreeing to take part in the residency you agree that we may publicise our organisation with your outcomes and work. You will always be credited and profit will never be made from your work. We do not take ownership of these works and they will belong to you.
