We are looking for proposals for Leeds walks for the global Jane's Walks Festival on 5-7 May 2017. Leeds is taking part for the first time. Walks can be of any type, as long as they are within Leeds during that weekend

The Jane's Walks Festival takes place on 5-7 May 2017. It is an annual, global festival of walking, in honour of Jane Jacobs, who died in 2006 and championed local neighbourhoods and the power of observation in understanding places.

Leeds is joining the festival for the first time, and we are looking for proposals for walks to take place over the weekend. Walks can be of any type, and we are looking in particular for the following:

  • neighbourhood-based walks
  • walks in the city centre on particular topics
  • walks which encourage people to observe or engage with the urban environment

walks can be local history, architecture, planning, environmentally or artistically based, we are looking to put together a varied and interesting programme for the weekend.

Please note that our funding is only to publicise the event as a whole, so we have no funding for walks and walk leaders or other expenses

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Anyone who is interested in putting on a walk in Leeds - artists, local historians, planners or whoever...
When is the deadline?
4 February for proposals
How many works can I submit?
As many as you like, though we would prefer it if you are able to go on other walks during the festival
When is the delivery date?
Over the weekend of 5-7 May 2017 (Friday to Sunday of the May Bank Holiday weekend). We are open to extending it to the Bank Holiday Monday, although that is outside the official festival
How much does it cost?
Nothing. All walks must be deliverable at no cost to participants
Are there payments to artists?
Sadly not. A successful festival this year should enable us to apply for funding for next year
Does the location have disabled access?
We encourage people to put on walks which are suitable for people with mobility-related disabilities, but we understand that this may not always be possible
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
We have funding for producing a festival guide, which will also publicise the artists involved
Do I need to be present?
Yes
Where will my venue be listed?
We will be producing a festival guide
How do you decide on proposals?
We are looking for walks which we find interesting, and which fit well with the Jane's Walk mission:

"To develop urban literacy and a community-based approach to city building by encouraging citizen-led walking tours that make space for every person to observe, reflect, share, question and collectively reimagine the places in which they live, work and play. In this way, we honour the legacy of Jane Jacobs whose writings championed the voices of local residents in neighbourhood planning"
What happens if my proposal is chosen?
We will let you know and discuss how to publicise your walk and also where to programme it in the festival
What kind of proposals are you looking for?
Any proposals for walks which engage with the urban environment
What is the selection criteria?
1. Fit with the Jane's Walk Principles and Mission
2. Interest (local history, planning issues, art/performance)
