I am looking for site specific artists/works, working in any medium to respond to Rory Macbeth's 'Utopia' sculptural/public work based in Norwich (4 Duke Street). This would be a pop up exhibition lasting for one day only, due to the work being situated outside of the building(near the end of April). However I'm planning that this would then become an online exhibition so that everyone can access it and see how the works responded to the text written and physical attributes of the site specific work by Rory Macbeth.

A bit about Rory Macbeth's 'Utopia (No Place)' 2006:

The text written on the building is "Utopia" by Sir Thomas More and would obviously be something for you to have a look at and perhaps pin point an idea, statement, word from this that you think can ground your physical work/interpretation. Or it might be that you have already produced something that challenges the idea of Utopia or would respond highly to Rory Macbeths interpreatation.

Macbeth reinterpreted the entire 44,000 word text onto every surface of a condemmed building. It looks at Western literature and protest writing on a structure scheduled for demolition except the building still stands before us today. The text is transformed into concrete poetry where words take on an unexpected significance highlighting every part of the building and its inner interior. You can find the full length of the description of the work and the building history through this site: Rory Macbeth Utopia Description .pdf

You can also see a short clip of the building here.

Your work:

Unfortuantly I can't pay you for your contribution to the exhibition and your time of making due to studying for a Masters in Curation at Norwich University Of The Arts. However I can promise you publicity of the pop up exhibition and an online platform of the work for the whole public to access.

The date of the exhibition is still to be confirmed however will be in mid/end of April.

If you feel like this isn't for you please don't be afraid to contact me or look on my website as we could work together in the future and I will add you to my archive of artists.
