CALL OUT for v i s u a l and s o u n d works responding to the premise of place[ness]

The Teal Ceramic is a project concerned with evoking the essence, provoking the experience and perceiving the moods and minds of a place through a cartography of sound and sight.

As sound and image are often thought of as being isolated from one another, there is a task for the viewer/listener to combine the two. The Teal Ceramic intends to give just enough to the audience in order for a(n honest) sense of place to be constructed.

We want to tease out this fragility in creating and constructing a sense of place. The ceramic as vessel plays out this idea with the potential of being full or empty. The ceramic as object also has a precarious value in that it can be broken or unbroken. Indeed, like our ears hearing -concurrently full and empty - and like the voice that speaks out against the void, The Teal Ceramic is about this transition and transposition between the two states of visibility (image) and invisibility (sound).

There is no parameter to aesthetic. We do not want to demarcate subjects, rather we want to [re]present the innate subjectivity that a place and person embody. We are calling for contributions in the following formats:

  • Photography
  • Collage
  • Illustration
  • Sound Art
  • Spoken Word
  • Compositions
  • Recordings

The project will be a triad of platforms; a publication, a website and and an exhibition that will take place in Bristol, UK.

The publication will devote itself to work that collides experience and environments primarily through the visual and the o/aural, but will also include features on architecture, urbanity, politics and the somatic.

The website will act as a continuous exploration and expression of place. Taking the magazine as its point of departure, we hope that individuals of both mediums will collaborate. Sounds will be downloaded, sights will be uploaded.

The exhibition and launch will be the main stage for the sound aspect of the project and thus we are calling out for musicians, poets, performance artists and anyone working in audio who would like to materialise their work in a gallery setting.
