Gain experience of public performance and work alongside one of today's most exciting contemporary artists.

We are looking to recruit a team volunteer performers to participate in a series of performance works by celebrated Spanish artist Dora Garcia as part of her exhibition These books were alive; they spoke to me! at The Tetley, 27 January – 23 April 2017.

This ambitious project marks the first time that The Tetley has staged an exhibition of live performance on this scale. Encompassing six performances, some of which have never been performed in English before, this project expands Garcia’s ongoing interest in using exhibition spaces as platforms to investigate the relationship between the visitor, the artwork and place; questioning what is real and what is fiction. Works offer explorations of what ‘performance’ is; action, situation, live act, scripted reality, narrated experience, interpretation and appropriation of characters and role-play.

Dora Garcia is a contemporary artist based in Barcelona. She represented Spain at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. Recent solo exhibitions include The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria; Michel Rein, Brussels, Belgium and Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland. She also exhibited in the 56th Venice Biennale and (d)OCUMENTA 13 and has works in several international collections including MACBA, Barcelona; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid and San Francisco MoMA, USA.

What is the opportunity?
