Featured artist: Amanda Jobson

Amanda Jobson is a visual artist based in Hastings on the Sussex Coast. Here she describes her recent explorations into ethnography and place through photography and video.

"I’m an artist who uses photography and have recently started expanding my practice into video. My process is based on research: exploring artistic methods, collating archives, unveiling what is hidden, connecting universal perspectives and contemporary themes.

My background is in professional photography; I'm a graduate of University of Westminster and spent my early years working for media agencies. However, I’m now working on self directed projects, producing artworks for galleries, and connecting with museums and other cultural organisations.

There is always a sense of place to my work. I derive a lot of my inspiration from walking along the coastline, gathering information, embracing the environment, and often returning to the same locations. The landscape draws me in - it connects me to nature and is important for my well-being. I feel that people are often disconnected from nature and that it is more important than ever to consider the importance of our planet and where we come from.

My work is currently being exhibited in the Arts Council funded touring project Constructed Geographies which responds to Sussex’s diverse heritage and population, and features artists including Maria Amidu, Akila Richards, Rikki Tarascas, Judith Ricketts, Josef Cabey and Amy Zamarripa Solis.

The work originally began as part of a research residency and developed into a series of large-scale photography and smaller video works. The exhibition was first shown at Onca Gallery in Brighton and will continue to tour to two additional venues: Hastings Arts Forum from 2nd - 14th April 2019 and Colonnade House in Worthing from 16th April - 4th May 2019.

My next project will be called Happy Place, where I will research my partner’s experience of combat related trauma and PTSD and how he lives with this condition."
