Featured artist: Belysning

I am a self-taught visual artist based in Kirklees in West Yorkshire. I often document my surroundings and use them as inspiration for creating acrylic paintings. However, being in lockdown and suffering with mental illness means that my life has become more difficult to deal with on a day to day basis as all my support systems are not available.

"Despite this, I have now started drawing and painting my anxieties and stress to create Covid-19 inspired artworks. The work I produce has more of a comic-style approach, documenting myself in my home and visualising my anxieties. I have also begun to create more abstract works which has enabled me to find a sense of calm in the situation.

I feel like the work I’m creating now emerges directly from the emotions I’m experiencing. A pure transference of feelings which is often hard for me to translate into my artwork. In that way, I feel that the current situation has given me inspiration and ignited a new sense of creativity inside me."

CuratorSpace are currently featuring articles by artists, curators and organisations who want to share their experiences of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, whether that is artists using their practice as a way of exploring new boundaries of isolation, or as a way to connect more broadly with their communities. We are also interested in hearing from curators and organisations who are offering support to artists.
