Jodie Beardmore: Labyrinth of the Mind

Jodie Beardmore is an award winning photographic artist based in West Yorkshire, specialising in conceptual and portrait photography. During this time in isolation she has been continuing a photography series related to her 2018 project 'Labyrinth of the Mind', which explored mental illness.

“Experiencing isolation during Covid-19 and recognising my own mortality is incredibly difficult, especially after recently experiencing the loss of my Grandad, three months ago. My photographic practice has guided me through some of the most difficult times in my life and has helped me to overcome depression and given me a sense of purpose.

My ongoing series 'Labyrinth of the mind' was set in a world bordering between dream and nightmare, similar to what you would experience when you are mentally ill. The imagery followed a narrative of my recovery from depression, caught between the world of the imagination and reality. Creating art has always been a cathartic process for me and it has enabled me to look at the world and myself in a whole new way. I have extended the original project by experimenting with imagery reminiscent of Rorschach tests.

My aim is to create photographs initially from my own ideas/experiences and then incorporate other people’s thoughts, projections and emotions into the work through a series of miniature interactive exhibitions or workshops where I will present the work and collect feedback from viewers.”

CuratorSpace are currently featuring articles by artists, curators and organisations who want to share their experiences of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, whether that is artists using their practice as a way of exploring new boundaries of isolation, or as a way to connect more broadly with their communities. We are also interested in hearing from curators and organisations who are offering support to artists.
