Betsy Bradley West Midlands, United Kingdom
I am an artist currently based in Coventry/Birmingham. My practice is a fluid entity rooted in painting that moves between sculpture, installation and interactive elements. The work deals with the immediacy of gesture and mark making, as well as the transient nature of materials and their hierarchical connotations within painting, proposing a utilitarian notion of the medium.
I consider my practice a fluid entity that embodies painting as a life force. My infatuation with the meditative nature of mark making forms a dialogue between body and mind. Driven by surprise, I deliberately stop at moments that lie on the cusp of becoming. Impulsive gesture enables the paint to take on its own agency and records an energy beyond its physical form.
Informed by my immediate surroundings, I incorporate found and reclaimed elements that speak of the reality of existing sustainably as an artist. These unconventional materials also question the hierarchical connotations of traditional painting. Transparent supports are a new development that consider the immersive potential of mark making.
The interactive aspects of my work animate painting, freeing it from its static confines. Playfully reversing the role of artwork and object, I propose a utilitarian, sculptural notion of a medium that exists within ever-changing conditions.
