Dawn Hemming West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Dawn Hemming is a multi-disciplined textile artist, knitwear designer/maker and fibre processor. She is also a published poet, lyric writer and singer and unpublished novelist. She creates hand knit mandalas from mixed fibres. She is available for workshops in either knitting or creative writing at basic to intermediate levels. She works in West Yorkshire as an Environmental Strategy Assistant

My textile art involves creating hand knit mandalas in any size from 3 inches to over a metre wide. I use traditional motifs with a modern twist. These pieces are often made with scrap yarns so nothing is wasted. They work as practical items as well as striking wall hangings. The mandalas have been displayed in several national and local galleries since 2018 including the Knitting & Stitching shows in London and Harrogate.

I have a BA Hons degree in humanities, a City & Guilds certificate in Knitware & Design and over 40 years of experience, including running workshops for children and adults in basic to intermediate knitting. I also process my own fibre from lambswool, alpaca and other natural fibres and can create my own yarns using basic spinning and plying skills.

i believe that i have a unique perspective on colour design; having spent more than 3 decades as a goth, it makes me appreciate how colours interact with each other. As I am often creating on the move, the names of my pieces reflect the places I pass though or have a personal connection with. The names have an immediate affect on the colour schemes i choose to work with.

I am also a published poet in many small press publications and magazines since late 1980ies and have written five novels in the SciFi and fantasy genres, including children's fiction. I am currently working on a new novel and seeking an agent for my back catalogue.
