I am a mixed media artist specialising in the creation of artists' books. I am lucky enough to work in a purpose built studio under the house. I create work for exhibitions, art markets and commissions. If asked why I do it my reply would have to be because I can't imagine not doing it. I have always had a strong desire to create.
Handmade books are at the heart of my practice, both practical sketchbooks and sculptural artists' books. I came to bookmaking from embroidery having for many years exhibited regularly with a textile group. I began by using recycled materials, mainly maps and old guide books to create intricate folded structures. This was followed by the creation of miniature books from old guide books which could still be read in a fragmentary way. These were displayed on specially made bookcases or in individual boxes. One thing led to another as things do and I began using old print trays and filling them with miniature books on a specific theme. These have become a signature piece as I have done several as commissions and have been invited this year to create some specifically for an exhibition at the Masham Gallery in North Yorkshire. In 2012 I fulfilled a long held ambitionand bought a printing press. After experimenting on my own for a while I did a printing course for a day a week which gave me the opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of techniques. I am now using the prints to create my sculptural books and on the covers of my sketchbooks. I've even begun to frame them as pictures in their own right and to my delight they are selling well. I mainly use lino cut techniques at the moment but am about to embark on a body of work using collagraph.
