Fatima Fletcher Spain
I am from London in the UK and currently based in las palmas, Gran Canaria. I make paintings, short videos and animated drawings. My background is in performance and video - I have video portraits in the NPG in London - and sometimes I do make forays there. I take commissions.
My art is a time thing, merging past, present and imagining what is to come. I take inspiration from contemporary and historic events , myths and legends old and new and also from the landscape where I find myself. I have made portraits of Hong Kong female protestors, mermaids in the South China Sea as victims of pollution and masked characters during the covid years. I use friends and family as models, most recently in a set of very small canvases collectively entitled 'Witches that I know and love' . During 2023 I have had my short video 'A Walk to the Shops' chosen for the Orbe Terracqueo film festival CLIMARTE - The Art to Save the Climate, Bergamo Italy and my very short video ´Prelude´ made in February 2023 in response to emergency surgery. A still from this video was shown in the exhibition Scar at The House of Smalls in Chipping Campden UK . In August my video 'Feels like North to me' was exhibited in Melbourne as part of Artaviso's 'Compass' exhibition - painted postcard works from this are available as NFTs at https://teia.art/ftfl8tch. I am currently working on canvases of local scenes where I live here in Las Palmas GC.
