Jo Gelsthorpe South Yorkshire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Jo Gelsthorpe is a mixed media artist based in South Yorkshire. Currently studying for a BA Fine Art through Hull University.

My abstract work could be suggested as being inspired by my love for the outdoors, natural elements and the human connection to the world around us. Every piece derives from somewhere whether its forms captured in my sketchbook, places I have visited or a memory or moment past To create my pieces I generate raw marks either using self made tools , discarded waste or old fabric remnants. I currently prefer oil paint as a primary medium, although I frequently combine it with other types of paint and materials to investigate the alchemy of their interactions. Adding, excavating, scratching and gestural mark making are all part of my art practice. Enjoying an organic way of working ensures that my pieces embrace the interplay of intention and chance.
