Nick James is an artist living and working in England. His style and methods are governed by the natural world and thoughts of the healing powers of art & colour. Nick graduated from Coventry in January, 2022, with much praise from tutors and peers alike. Nick has had a few private sales and has two works exhibited at Walsall New Art Gallery (New Contemporaries)
The focus of my work is to observe my surroundings and consider the ever-changing world. These observations focus upon nature and the sky. Furthermore, my work considers cultural and spiritual change in our societies, countries and the planet, I like to think that hope and positive changes can be provided through arts and colour. Additionally, I have long been fascinated by the overview effect, ’an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it.’ Additionally, my work considers the psychology of arts and I hope promotes healing, aligning with changes in societies, worldwide. ‘We are so adept at recognising and creating natural patterns: we embody some of the very patterns that are ubiquitous in the natural world in which we evolved.’ Before my MA I was self-taught. Studying and investigating my contemporaries, past and present, I see a deeper aspect of nature in the way artists create.
This work is part of 9 abstract, lyrical landscapes: Imagined Cosmos.inspired, somewhat by a conversation I had at the Hare Krishna temple in. Birmingham. I was told, something along the lines of, ‘Lord Krishna awakes before everyone and paints the skies’ to which I replied, ‘Why does he paint it the same every time?’ The response I got was almost blank, perhaps that as if I were a little crazy. However, to me as a painter it seemed bizarre, that it was pretty much the same every time, It is true, there are seasons, emotions and different moods, however, the pallet is a little too limited. The series is nine, 94 x94 cm acrylic on canvas, created on the floor, taking whichever approach allowed me to create what inspired me in the moment. Pouring paint, on the floor allows me to become a physical part of the work while I create it, while also allowing me to become meditative and, of the moment, working instinctively. I hope the work inspires inner peace and tranquility and healing.
Artist Biography Nick James is an emerging artist living and working in Warwickshire, England. His style and methods are governed by the natural world and thoughts of the healing powers of art & colour. Nick studied at Coventry University, graduating in January, 2022, with much praise from tutors and peers alike. Before Coventry, Nick was a self-taught artist with a background in design. The studios at Coventry gave Nick the opportunity to work as a painter, rather than imagine. While at Coventry Nick produced a wide and varied array of work, latterly using watered down acrylics, pouring and canvases on the floor to create subtle watercolour start landscapes and other imagined spaces. Nick has had a few private sales and has two works from this series exhibited at Walsall New Art Gallery (New Contemporaries) Two further group exhibitions at Coventry University.
