Bear Print Design Greater Manchester, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

My name is Jo Wright and I'm a self-taught printmaker based in Manchester. My background is in design, illustration and environmental interpretation (I studied at Manchester Polytechnic and the University of Salford). My work is influenced by animals, travel, folklore and the natural world. I run print workshops for individuals and organisations in the northwest.

I work mainly in Lino print, I love the graphic quality of carving and using a limited colour palette, I also experiment in screen print and mokuhanga (Japanese woodcut). Animals and their environments feature largely in my work. The first Lino print I ever produced was of a young black bear following a trip to Canada in 2011. I've travelled extensively with my ecologist partner looking for the world's rarest animals and I'll always try to collect traditional tales and folklore on the way. I have a background in illustration and so I like to create images that could contain a hidden story or narrative. I am a passionate environmentalist and am concerned by issues such as global warming and habitat loss; these issues also influence the direction of my work.
