Erika is a graduate from the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford. In 2021 she was awarded the Emerging Artist Studio Bursary at Positive Light Projects, allowing her to continue her place-based practice in Devon. Erika is an advocate for public access to nature, and her practice encourages local engagement with the environment through printmaking, photography and socially engaged events.
Erika Cann is an artist whose home lies between the granite tors of Dartmoor National Park and the dynamic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast in Devon. Her work investigates place through accounts and narrative, both historical and contemporary, within the guides and maps of an area. She navigates the environment through climbing - pushing, pulling, jamming and squeezing her way up and through time, geologies and accumulated narratives. Deep, or non-cartographic forms of 'mapping' emerge as Erika attempts to break the perspective of the top-down view of a map. The work takes the form of photography, film, and printmaking, which is often imbued with language. She hopes to engage local communities with the landscape in a position of care and enjoyment through exploration, which is ecologically considered yet adventurous.
