Britten's Peter Grimes: Sea Interludes - Film Commission

Medium: Film

A commissioned piece to accompany the 'Storm' Interlude during two performances of Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes at Dartington Hall in August 2017.

The highly visual film will follow on from my experimental work with inks in water, mimicking both the orchestra and the stormy sea.

The concert performances will be semi-staged, with the internationally-acclaimed operatic tenor Paul Nilon in the title role, alongside young professional singers and a large chorus of non-professional and community singers. The Dartington Festival Orchestra will be led by musicians on the Advanced Conducting Course, as well as the celebrated conductor Sian Edwards.

Peter Grimes tells the story of a coastal community who turn against a brooding, loner fisherman after his young apprentice drowns whilst in his employ and care. Britten’s atmospheric and dramatic score uses the sea as a metaphor for the mood of the town.

On 24 and 26 August 2017, Dartington International Summer School & Festival will present two performances of Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter Grimes, in the iconic medieval Great Hall venue.

Basic Space

Medium: Performance

People passing all around. Cars, voices, noises blurring into background sound. Faces one by one fading into the distance.

Basic Space explores how easy it can be to feel completely alone in a busy city street. People bustling all around. Nameless faces passing by. The isolation that can be felt in the everyday, even when surrounded by people.

Follow 2 astronauts as they embark upon a journey across the city. Together and alone, on a quite quest for connection.

This visually compelling pilgrimage across a familiar landscape explores what many endure on an everyday basis. With themes of mental illness and isolation Basic Space is a reflective journey that delves into our need for connection and what happens when it is lacking.

For intimate audiences, each audience member is given a headset connected to pre-recorded audio as we journey through the city together.

Living Space

Medium: Live Installation

For Hijacked Festival 2016 I was invited to create a live installation set against that years theme: space.

A collaborative project utilising the performative skills of First Line Theatre, the installation explored our relationships with the space, our living space and the connections that we create with and within it.

The installation itself took the form of a 'living room', which was constructed against the backdrop of the natural surrounding of the Double Locks festival site, using trees and bushes to hand lampshades and pictures for a natural/constructed juxtaposition.

We then spent the day at the festival in our handmade replica space suits, interacting with both our surroundings, as well as festival goers. Playing board games and doing some walk-about for photo opportunities.

We also took the installation to Poltimore Festival 2016 & 2017 as well as performing 'Basic Space' in and around the beautiful setting of Poltimore House.

Our Space

Medium:

Our Space was a 2016 exhibition that I curated for The Edwardian Cloakrooms Bristol, as part of a week long residency given by Bristol City Council.

The pieces included all reflected the theme of 'space' and the different ways we use it, which worked well within the repurposed space of the Edwardian Cloakrooms. For this I used the titled white walls to create removable marker illustrations of life-sized household items. Within this setting we then installed pre-existing artworks around the same theme, as well as including a performance of Basic Space each day.

Works featured included First Line Theatre, James Mccoll and myself.
