I am a contemporary figurative oil painter and artist mentor based in Hove, East Sussex. I make work in response to family, personal history and the world around me often allowing the materials themselves to guide the process.

I am first and foremost a painter. The stuff itself fascinates me.. and the sensual qualities of oil paint plus a love of saturated colour underly my practise.

I am a physical painter and often choose larger canvases so that I can use my whole body when I paint. For me this is intrinsic to my mark making and the energy of the work. The laying down of long dynamic brushstrokes somehow binds me to the painting and seals my commitment to it.

My work is playful and a synthesis of sound, voice, memory and future projection. When making a work I need to have a connection with the subject matter. It is this connection that sets the vibration of the work and of my process in its making. Music, prose and personal history have been an integral part of my work. Paintings can start as a direct reaction to a song or spoken word and myself as a conduit translating audible to visible. This is at the heart of my abstraction, the allowance of marks to be made often without thought and as a direct physical response to what is heard. I find it a very exciting process and something which I’d like to develop.

Current work sees me delving into my own history through the translation of analogue photos and memory. This painting journey is moving me away from realism and into a world of suggestion and storytelling. I am excited to be in a mental space where allowance is helping guide the way forward.
