I like shadows, the way light directs them. Silhouettes, patterns across a surface, disruptive contrasts. Back in the day I was mostly into colour, painting subtle harmonies or bright clashes. Rarely did I venture into strong tonal contrasts. Now I seem to like them, to relish mysterious darknesses.
I've become impatient, need to work fast, and explore quickly. That's where my computer comes in. It acts like a hyper-assistant checking out multiple variations and unexpected answers in the blink of an eye. Of course the old painterly ways often jump back in,but now everything is that much faster. I usually start with a camera (my eye and my memory) and check out what's around me. West Wales is full of wild rugged landscapes as well as colourful seaside resorts. I examine both. There's a Spring Fair in Hereford I always snap at.
And I enjoy the shopping experience of Birmingham's Bull Ring and the energy of London's railway stations. That and much else is sieved through my electronics for creative potential, and further pictorial exploration.
