I am an abstract artist currently based in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire. I work with acrylic based mediums and large canvases to create bold paintings probing the human condition. I did a BA in Art and Visual Culture at UWE in Bristol and worked as a music photographer in London; my move to painting was a vital transition that has become my obsession and greatest commitment.
I work as a full-time professional artist. My early development as a painter evolved in isolation based on a bedrock of ideas - Absurdism, a clarion call for personal autonomy and freedom in all things, the current societal attitudes that threaten that freedom and the inevitable moral relativism in all individuals.
They show absurdity, disorder, insensate and disembodied forms constrained and fragmented in these two dimensional spaces. Rough edges, traces of previous layers and colours bleeding into the present, evidence of brush strokes, older lines painted over, textural and substantial. Hints of biomorphic form, curving and suggestive shapes pressed together in enforced intimacy, sightless life encased in their tight little worlds emanating a wordless, formless desperation.
To me painting is all about a raw, instinctive response to an emotional condition, putting it on a canvas as truthfully as possible and in my own language. It is a chance to convey an interior world and to give form to a powerful existential desire for both freedom and connection. Lately, my ongoing themes of the absurd, romantic and chaotic have developed into more personal issues of conflicting desires, pressures of time and the constraints put on the individual by society: a plea for the release of one’s potency in a world that increasingly restricts and confines.
