JanCarlo Caling West Midlands, United Kingdom
JanCarlo Caling (He/Him) is a multidisciplinary artist and body image activist from Birmingham, UK. Using his distinctive style of cute visual language and maximalism, he reimagines the archaic view of masculinity and attractiveness. His work centres around chubby black & brown men to tackle, racism, fatphobia and internalised homophobia within the gay community.
JanCarlo is a digital artist specialising in illustration and animation. During his studies in Birmingham City University, he explored his personal identity, as a queer and Filipino man. This exploration has led to the development of his own distinctive art style. His style can be defined by his use of bright/hot pastel colours and the use of kawaii & cute visual language. His design style and subject matter of chubby black and brown men aim to reimagine the archaic view of masculinity and attractiveness within the gay community. His work takes inspiration from other queer artists like George Quaintance, Tom of Finland, David Hockey and Vintage gay magazines like 'Physique Pictorial' & ‘BlueBoy'
