  Back to profiles

B. 1992, UK. Joshua Phillips is an artist living and working in London. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2017 and has previously lived and worked in Manchester. Recent exhibitions include The Future is Ours (Landskrona Photography Festival, Sweden, 2018), Acts of the Plough (Art Licks Weekend, London, UK, 2018), Acts of Disappearance (Lodz Photography Festival, Poland, 2018).

Joshua Phillips’ practice takes at its core an interest in how symbolism operates across decorative visual culture and how ornament can function to provide a momentary platform for aesthetic pleasure within the everyday. The work seeks to acknowledge the stages of visual reception and examines the withdrawal of purpose inherent in the act of looking at pattern. Photography is used in the work to put emphasis on the act of looking from both the perspective of the viewer and the camera’s relation with its subject. Recent work has invested in the idea of how recognizable imagery is stylized and blended into design, in particular the use of nature as a motif.
