Lauren Southworth Warwickshire, United Kingdom
I am a recent graduate visual artist (BA Hons Fine art, Coventry University) wishing to build a career in research, writing, lecturing as well as remaining active in creating art. I work across multiple mediums but primarily work in photography, drawing, sculpture and installation.
Transformation is at the heart of my artistic practice. In my current work, I look at the written word and records of universal themes; time, emotion and memory. I break these words down into a visual language that becomes both impossible to read and but universally understandable. It is the breakdown of recognisable linguistics that allows the viewer rely on emotions. Much of this work has been created with the phrase "where words fail" in mind, recording emotions in which words seem unfitting and incapable of portraying their intensity. My work encompasses drawings, sculptures, sound work and more, all retaining the presence of the human hand and the need to experiment in it's creation, while letters, diaries, internal monologue etc become embedded into large expansive fields of colour and mark making.
My research is heavily involved in feminist theory, curational ethics and philosophy, particularly in regards to art history, sculpture and materiality. Degree show profile: https://covdegreeshow.coventry.ac.uk/undergrad/courses/think/ba-hons-fine-art/lauren-southworth/
