Matilde Tomat Lancashire, United Kingdom
  Back to profiles

Matilde is an artist, writer and psychotherapist. In no particular order. Matilde’s work investigates the reactions of the viewers while reflecting on the artist’s role in society, the caducity of art, and their relevance within the interplay of time, and isolation. Practice-led MA by Research at YSJ "On Encountering the Divine in the Act of Drawing."

Matilde Tomat is an installation conceptual performative multifaceted artist whose practice focus is on the absence of and / or search for boundaries. Her interest is in the process itself and not in the final piece, where the three-dimensionality of her works takes on the fourth one of time and where space, time and their limitations disappear. This process is then followed by a reflective writing practice. Her work is mainly morphogenetic and follows intuitions, instincts, and impulses. Her choice of material stems from an almost archaeological strategy based on enquiry and investigation, ordering and archival. Grounded in existential psychoanalysis and an eclectic philosophical approach, she is interested in creating a phenomenological responsive space where professionals can engage in space exploration, conceptual elaborations, material tactility, and the stopping of time; a safe space where transformation happens. Her practice evolved from the enquiry on personal loss and memory to the discernment of past events, the idea of posterity, the concept of Truth and the Seen, and her identity as an artist as seen by “the others” while in the act of creating. A lover of silence, she is intrigued by hidden connections, synchronicities, and the mystical. Originally from Italy, she now lives and creates in the UK.
