4 paid mural commissions aimed at emerging artists and illustrators. Each commission also includes tailored mentoring and support from a professional mural artist.

Assembly House Studios are inviting emerging artists to respond to an open brief for this exciting paid opportunity. We are commissioning 4 small-scale murals in the area around our studio in Armley, Leeds. Whether you have lots of experience of painting murals, or you are looking for an opportunity to learn new skills and build experience in this area, we'd love to hear your ideas. If you've never painted a big mural or worked outside before, don't be put off; we've tailored this opportunity as a way to learn all about the technical and practical sides of public-space art, and will be on hand to support and advise throughout the project.

We are looking for ideas which show a creative approach to working in public space, and avoid the cliches sometimes associated with community murals.

We don't believe in asking for finished designs in advance, and so to apply you just need to outline your idea, how you would approach the project, and give us a few examples of your work; we don't need to see a sketch or design yet and you will have total creative freedom in your work if selected. The chosen sites will be no more than 3x4m, with a variety of surfaces. Each artist will be paired with a site which best suits their practice.

Each artist will recieve £130 as an artist fee, £20 additional for expenses and materials, and free paint through our partnership with Seagulls. You will also recieve two mentoring sessions and follow-up support from professional, full-time artists living and working in Leeds. This support will be tailored around your interests and could cover anything from practical materials/processes advice to guidance in applying for funding, building your portfolio, generating revenue as an artist or many other areas.

All artworks will be painted on-site between 26th August and 12th September 2019. There is no minimum time commitment, and you can take as much or as little time to complete your artwork as you need. Artists will be expected to attend the opening event for the project on the 14th September 2019.

This project is supported by Leeds Inspired and Seagulls , and is a partnership with the Armley Action Team.

All artworks will remain the sole intelectual propery of the artist. All copyright wil remain with the artist and Assembly House will use images of the final artworks only for relevant promotional purposes and with full credit to the artist.
