Artist Brief - Hospital Corridor Commission

Introduction

The Northern General is the largest hospital campus within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spanning 100 acres. It is situated approximately three miles from the hospitals at the central campus and is easily accessed via the M1 motorway.

The hospital has over 1100 beds and employs more than 16,000 staff. Together with the other hospitals managed by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, a wide range of specialist services are provided.

We are looking for artwork to be displayed in the Firth building on the B Floor corridor of the Northern General. The corridor is in a busy part of the hospital, particularly as it leads to a number of outpatient’s clinics.

Artist’s brief

We are inviting proposals from artists who would like to create new, or submit existing artworks for permanent display in one of our busy corridor areas.   We are looking for three pieces in total. All three pieces are being displayed in the same area so must complement each other. Approximate measurements are shown below.

Due to our stringent infection control and fire safety regulations, we have been asked that artwork in this area is printed on to Altro-whiterock digiclad (http://www.altro.co.uk/Altro-Whiterock-Digiclad).  This has a professional quality with durable coating and is glued directly onto the walls.  This method will ensure minimum collection of dust and the surface can be easily wiped clean.

In addition, it should meet the below criteria:-

·         Artwork should be 2-D, wall-based and provided to the printer as a digital file.

·         Artwork should evoke interest, improve mood and enrich the environment.

·         The artwork should help distract patients and visitors from where they are and act as a mechanism to evoke positivity, comfort and social interaction.

·         Ideally the artwork will be contemporary, bright and have an uplifting effect on all people using the hospital (including patients, visitors and staff).

·         The colour scheme in the corridor is quite neutral (off white grey) so we’d like to see something with colour that complements, but enhances the environment.

·         Artwork should meet all the Infection Control and Health & Safety requirements.

·         The artwork must not obstruct the areas in any way as they are used for access and Fire Exits.

Measurements

The three pieces will need to be sized as below. These are approximate measurements and will be later confirmed:

3600mm (w) x 1200 (h)
4000mm (w) x 1200 (h)
2400mm (w) x 1200 (h)

Deadline for applications - Thursday 18th January – 5pm

Please note that only shortlisted artists will be contacted.

Budget -  £1,700  inclusive of all artist’s fees and inclusive of VAT.  Final artwork should be provided to us in high resolution jpeg or tiff format suitable for print on Altro-Whiterock Digiclad.  Print, delivery and installation costs will be covered by the Trust.

Timescale - The artwork must be completed by Friday 30th March 2018.

Selection - The Project Team will consider the applications and select a candidate on the strength of their application and the information that they provide.

Closing Date for applications - all applications must be received by Thursday 18th January 2018. We hope to make our selection and notify the successful candidate by Tuesday 30th January 2018.
