The brief

The 62 Group offers members the opportunity to submit work around the theme

Conversations: People, Places, Materials, Objects. The theme explores the working relationship that artists have with the world around them and artwork that investigates the creative dialogue that takes place between the artist/maker and the themes: people, place, materials, objects.

Members can respond to the theme Conversations: People, Places, Materials, Objects, in any way that they want but please ensure there is a connection to the title and that this is made clear in your statement. There is no need to submit work that responds to the collections and location of the gallery but there is a wealth of inspiring information available in the St Barbe Museum and collection that members may wish to draw on.

The same piece of work may not be exhibited in 62 Group Exhibitions on more than two occasions. Work included in touring exhibitions may not be re-submitted for subsequent exhibitions. For clarification: a work can be made up of several modules to be hung together but must be sold as one complete work.

Selected artists will be notified by October 20th. You will then be instructed to pay a £15 hanging fee (per work)
What are the selection criteria?
1. Quality – that work chosen is of high quality and represents the professionalism of Group
2. The artist must demonstrate their use of critical judgement and consideration of underlying ideas and successful resolution
3. The work should demonstrate the artist’s originality (their distinctive voice)
4. The work must demonstrate a sound and professional technical approach
5. The work must be professional presented to ensure that the work can be hung andwell displayed
6. The work should respond to the brief
7. The work should be a completed artwork, we are not accepting proposals.
How does digital selection work?
1. Work is digitally pre-selected to proceed to the 2nd stage in-person selection.
2. All work pre-selected at the digital 1st stage selection will be shown unless it differs in quality or representation from the original statement or image.
3. The 2nd stage selection at the gallery is to check quality of work and presentation. If a work isn’t to standard, or appears different to the original statement or image when seen in person it will not get through the 2nd stage and therefore the artist will lose a life.
4. A work may make it through 2nd stage selection but not hung if there is too much selected work to be accommodated in the gallery. In this case a curatorial decision will be made, the work will be marked ‘selected but not hung’, and the artist will not lose a life.
