Open call for 'DEM
Deadline: 08/10/2017City: Everywhere | i o u a e
Open call - Submissions wanted for a new online residency series, taking place in October and November.
You are invited to submit proposals for the fourth online residency series, ‘DEM. Looking at the origin of the Caribbean slang that made its way to the gangs of London, we ask applicants to consider which gangs they belong to and how it influences their work.
Since Taylor Swifts BAD BLOOD SQUAD, Suicide Squads movie release, Behati’s bunch and the Kardashian Klan, celebrity fuelled gangs are on the rise and more topical then ever. We all know that who we hang with reflects who we are, so how does your best mate affect the work you produce? Every person has an identity that is informed by several factors, from their gender, relationships, place of birth, age, heritage etc. Do our personalities match our work?
Providing a setting to publish content, we want to explore how art is inspired and informed by these factors, and how we as artists assert our identity. This could already existing work that fits within the theme or brand new work created for this residency. There is no prescribed residency length so please consider how long you would like you residency to last and what you can do in that period.
Whilst this opportunity theme is purposefully open we inspired by the assimilation of typically working class slang into internet culture and its 'cool' status amongst artists, we are asking our successful applicants to figure out who they are and whether what they make is a true reflection of that. What have you appropriated from your surroundings and put into your practice?
Unless you have hid under a rock you know about the Hetty Douglas #workingclassgate that came about after the posting of our open call. It highlights the importance of reflecting on who we are and whether we represent that authentically, and understanding what we have assimilated that is external to ourselves.
We want our applying artists to consider the themes of gender, identity, relationships, subcultures, post-internet and appropriation and come up with an amazing online residency project about who they genuinely are as artists. Do you explore male club stereotypes, privilege, your northern roots, your millennial status etc?
We can’t wait to read your submissions
