"Finding A Way Home". 2020 was marked by global hardship and suffering, a year where the term “uncertainty” became near meaningless but the phrase “life changing” became all too familiar. It has already been recognised as a monumental moment in history of comparative significance to the two world wars, the ripples of which will still be being felt for many years to come. But there is a positive legacy of 2020 to be unearthed in the year ahead; one that recognises the strength of communities against overwhelming adversity; one that applauds the extraordinary efforts and individual sacrifices made; and one that celebrates the peace and resilience we were able to find in this new and harsh reality. 2021 promises a chance for recovery and the search for hope, as we step out on a journey, to find a way home.

**UPDATE** With the recent UK announcement of a roadmap out of the current lockdown we can be confident that this exhibition will be able to physically take place in our venue this Spring and we will be using this as our relaunch event. As a precautionary measure to avoid disruption, we have taken the decision to delay the start of the exhibition to April 19th (7 days after the current predicted date for the return of non-essential retail). Additional opening days and hours will be added to accommodate this delay, as well as an extension to the submission deadline, which will now run until Midnight March 14th.

"Finding A Way Home" is a multi-stranded photographic and digital artwork exhibition hosted by Artizan Collective CIC and co-curated and produced by The South West Collective and Artizan Gallery.

Featuring a headline exhibition, a showcase of 5-8 spotlighted artists, and an open selection of individual works, this South West first invites submissions of work that consider the idea of "home" both in the traditional sense and the contemporary context in light of the global pandemic.

Full details of the themes, opportunity and how to take part are outlined below.

THEMES

The focus of all the call opportunities is the theme of "Home". There are no restrictions on how this is interpreted by applicants, but we anticipate that recent global events may play into responses. Additionally, artists may wish to consider:

- Personal responses to their own home

- Home as a multifunctional space

- Home as an environment, a shared space, a safe place

- Isolation and the solitary experience of home

- Home as a transient and fragile space

- Belonging and togetherness

- Physicality vs Spirituality of home – the objects, items and buildings vs the emotions, concepts and constructs that define these spaces

- The wider construct of home and place socially – identity, nationalism, patriotism

ABOUT THE ORGANISERS

Artizan Collective CIC is a non-profit social enterprise supported by Artizan Gallery established in 2019 to take advantage of opportunities to access prominent but vacant retail and commercial buildings on behalf of the arts. In these spaces, they deliver professional curated exhibitions opportunities for the benefit of practitioners and audiences, as well as valuable programmes that promote community arts engagement.

They currently hold a venue at the heart of the English Riviera, situated near the Torquay harbourside and benefitting from prominent positioning, easy accessibility and high footfall, and have developed the space into a welcoming arts space. From here they host an annual programme of open exhibitions and showcases, welcoming professional and award-winning creatives in various fields as well as emerging talent, to exhibit under one roof, whilst promoting the wider cultural offer of this premier seaside resort.

OPPORTUNITIES

There are two open calls which artists can submit work to:

- An open call for individual works (selective, see Terms and Conditions for full details of selection and judging)

- An open call for work in series and collections from individual artists (selective, see Terms and Conditions for full details of selection and judging)

All opportunities are for submissions of photography or artists working in digital mediums which include some element of photographic practice. A zine will be produced to commemorate the exhibition and a range of prizes are on offer from partners for applicants and participants. Artists can submit to both opportunities.

Full exhibition terms and conditions can be found here: https://bit.ly/2Js7vk8

INDIVIDUAL WORK SUBMISSIONS

This call is ideally suited to any artists wishing to submit individual pieces or small bodies of work.

- Artists can submit up to four works for the exhibition

- Artists may submit four works that form a series and indicate that these are submitted as one entry but would forego submitting additional works

- This opportunity is "Pay As You Feel" and artists can submit the maximum number of works for no fee.

- Individual works should be no greater than A2 before framing, and all works must be provided framed for the exhibition (see Terms and Conditions for full details of expectations for display ready work https://bit.ly/2Js7vk8)

- Works should be available for sale in some format. This might be the displayed framed work or alternatively high-quality print runs (limited or unlimited editions). You will be asked to provide details of this in your submission form.

- This is a selective call, and your entry does not guarantee you will be included in the exhibition

- All selected works will be included in the exhibition zine, with some additional works included from submissions

- All applicants who make the minimum submission contribution, regardless of selection, will be considered for prize draws

- A People’s Choice Award will run for the duration of the exhibition with one winner being selected

COVID-19

The COVID-19 global pandemic has required us to make significant changes in the way we work to ensure the safety of audiences and partners. Below we briefly outline our commitment to safety as well as the contingencies in place if for whatever reason events relating to the pandemic impact the exhibition.

Artizan Collective CIC and Artizan Gallery venues and employees undertake all the required steps to remain COVID-19 Secure in line with the government’s standards for retail premises and cultural venues. As well as implementing provisions which enable us to work safely with the public in a retail setting, this also applies to the way we work with artists to securely display and showcase their work and deliver supporting services. If you have any specific queries about how this is achieved or need to make us aware of special arrangements you may require, please get in touch.

KEY CHANGES TO EXHIBITIONS

COVID-19 Secure guidelines such as social distancing will apply to all our working practices and may impact delivery and collection procedures. As always, we will aim to be as flexible as possible to support the needs of artists, but some procedures will undoubtedly be more restrictive

Retail premises are required to manage their audiences to allow sufficient distancing within venues and as such there will be requirements to limit the total number of visitors in the venue at one time. This may also require us to mark a prescribed route around the exhibition that audiences will be obliged to follow.

Due to restrictions on large gatherings we exhibition launch events cannot be guaranteed and the format of these may vary.

CONTINGENCY PLANNING

We do not foresee an eventuality where we have to cancel the exhibition but if for whatever reason this is necessary, we will endeavour to carry over submissions to future opportunities.

SHIELDING

Are you shielding? We want to do our best to support anyone to submit to the show so if you’re shielding, get in touch to discuss options for how you can safely provide work for the show if selected.
