FRAMING THE CRISIS is a multi-disciplinary open-call exhibition, to be held at System Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 19/05/17 to 16/06/17. This collaborative show, coordinated by VAULT COLLECTIVE, will bring together the work of both established and emerging artists.

FRAMING THE CRISIS seeks work responding to the recent media coverage of the circulation of people and how this feeds into the current political climate, this could range from issues of economic migration, refugees, or free movement within EU countries, etc.

We are particularly interested in work showing ‘movement’ as something more than a single issue occurring in a vacuum. For example, work which explores context, cause and effect on a global, national or local scale.

VAULT COLLECTIVE is seeking submissions in the form of any creative response, including the visual arts, installation, performance, and beyond. We are asking that each submission or proposal have an accompanying text that will be published as part of the exhibition. Much like the artworks being submitted, the accompanying text can have any structure.

--

In addition, we will also be hosting a series of events for THE LATE SHOWS on 20/05/17, including a secret cinema screening. For this, we are seeking short films (5mins approx) which explore themes of migration and movement.

THE LATE SHOWS is a late-night culture crawl across all of the major arts/culture/heritage venues across Newcastle and Gateshead. Follow the link for more info> http://thelateshows.org.uk/ <.

WHAT TO SUBMIT

Proposals are invited from artists working individually or collaboratively.

Artists at any stage of their career may apply.

No more than 3 submissions per artist or collaboration.

Each submission must have accompanying text that will be published as part of the exhibition. PLEASE NOTE this does not need to be the final text, but should give an idea of what the artist’s intent is.

A submission can be a finished piece of work, a work in progress, or a proposal for work yet to be created. Work yet to be created must show planning, as well as examples of previous artworks.

PLEASE NOTE there is little provision for equipment to aid exhibition. Any items such as projectors, cabinets, etc must be provided by the artists.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

The four week exhibition will run from Friday 19th May until Friday 16th June, and will be based at SYSTEM art gallery.

Any work being exhibited can be offered for sale if the artist is happy to do so. We ask that 20% of any sale made during the exhibition be donated to SYSTEM gallery to cover costs as a non-profit creative platform.

Work selected for FRAMING THE CRISIS will need to be ready for Friday 12th May, ready to be installed in time for Thursday 18th May. Work will need to be collected again after the exhibition closes on Saturday/Sunday 19/20th April.

We kindly ask that artists selected for exhibition make a donation of £5 each towards covering costs of the exhibition install and de-install, to be collected upon exhibition install.

ARTISTS are responsible for the organisation and costs of delivery and collection of the work.

PLEASE NOTE that SYSTEM gallery does not have insurance to cover the costs of any damage, loss or theft that happens during the exhibition, and is not constantly manned. Consequently, neither VAULT COLLECTIVE nor SYSTEM are able to take any responsibility for fragile works, or equipment such as projectors etc.

Unfortunately the gallery is not wheelchair accessible, with access to the top floor only being gained via a narrow staircase. This access issue must be considered when submitting as it also limits the size of work that can be accepted, however work can be assembled in situ.
