Following the success of previous shows curated by Michael Burkitt, Helen Thackray, James Woolley and Gwen Cook, 20-21 Visual Arts Centre is once again offering the opportunity for a recent graduate to curate an exhibition in our gallery showcase.

Showcase 2018 - Opportunity for a Graduate Curator

What are we looking for?

We are especially interested in projects that engage our broad audiences (including family groups, young people and retired visitors) in current contemporary art, craft or design practice and presentation – and embrace the nature of the space being used (details of the showcase space are included below).

Who

Anyone graduating in the past 3 years, from a curatorial studies, fine art, applied art or related subject at degree or post-graduate level at a university or college, or anyone currently studying for a postgraduate qualification in these subjects.

When

The exhibition is programmed to take place from 6 October 2018 to 3 February 2019.

Where

20-21 Visual Arts Centre is an Arts Council England National Portfolio gallery situated in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The gallery shows contemporary art by a wide variety of artists across five gallery spaces and receives around 35,000 visitors per year from a broad public audience demographic.

The showcase is a large glass fronted cabinet measuring 323cm (w) by 178cm (h), with movable/removable glass shelves, recessed into the wall by 55cm, positioned in a popular area of the gallery near our café area. Power is available in the cabinet and there are a number of fixing options (see a plan and images of the space in the gallery for this opportunity).

Fee

A fee of £500 is payable to the successful applicant to cover any fees and costs of the project. This should include travel, the transport of the work to and from the gallery and installation. Technical support, installation materials and other support may be available on discussion with the venue. All work will be fully insured for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibition will be advertised in our annual Exhibition and Events Leaflet with 12,000 copies circulated throughout the region and to venues and arts organisations nationally.

How to apply

Please submit a short proposal (as a pdf document maximum 2 sides of A4), CV/biography of the curator (as a pdf document maximum two sides A4). The documents should include contact information and any relevant links/ documentation.

Who is eligible for this opportunity?
Anyone graduating in the past 3 years, from a curatorial studies, fine art, applied art or related subject at degree or post-graduate level at a university or college, or anyone currently studying for a postgraduate qualification in these subjects.
When is the deadline?
1 July 2018.
What are the exhibition opening hours?
20-21 is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm.
Does the location have disabled access?
Yes - the building is fully accessible.
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
Exhibition and Events Leaflet with 12,000 copies circulated throughout the region and to venues and arts organisations nationally.
Do I need to be present?
We expect the curator to be present during the installation process.
What kind of proposals are you looking for?
We are especially interested in projects that engage our broad audiences (including family groups, young people and retired visitors) in current contemporary art, craft or design practice and presentation – and embrace the nature of the space being used (details of the showcase space are included below).
Are you expecting expecting a group exhibition?
We anticipate the exhibition to include more than one artist but will not rule out a curated solo show, although we wouldn’t expect an applicant to curate their own work in the space if this were the case.
Do the artists need to be confirmed before applying?
No, although we would expect the curator to be the primary contact with any involved artists and to suggest artists that they have a realistic chance of securing for the exhibition. Normally curators will suggest a theme and examples of potential artists at application stage, the final show will stem from these beginnings.
What do you expect from the curator?
We expect the curator to be the primary contact with the artists, to provide a basic budget, to formulate or commission any contextualising text (if appropriate), to organise and manage transport/shipping of works, and to curate how the work will be presented in the space. The team at 20-21 can provide support in a number of different areas including technical/installation requirements and materials, publicity support and production and audience engagement support.
£500 is not a lot of money to curate a show with?
This is part of the challenge for the applicant. In the past, curators for the show have spent the entire budget on transport and presentation, while others have managed to pay exhibitors a small fee, cover transport costs and still managed to cover their own costs and take a small fee themselves. Applicants could consider artists that are already within their own networks or local vicinity so that artworks can be easily be collected and brought to the venue, or approaches such as mail-art or new-media presentations that can collate work at minimal cost.

We are not averse to the possibility of the applicant using the fee as match to secure further funding towards the project.
