HUSK project - Call for artist-led workshops and events working with young people in North Lincolnshire, summer 2019.

HUSK is a sculpture and environmental art project taking place during 2019.

Working with sculptor Anna Gillespie to develop a site-specific installation for our Gallery Steel Rooms space, we are currently seeking funding to support a series of educational opportunities provided by established artists and makers which will engage young people in North Lincolnshire.

The workshops and events will accompany the HUSK exhibition, July-August 2019.

We'd like to hear from you if you have the following:

  • An established practice in arts and crafts with strong links to nature and the environment.
  • Experience in providing workshops or arts and crafts activities working with young people. These may be of differing age groups relative to your experience. We would like submissions as appropriate for activities ranging from ten to 20 years old.
  • Awareness of diversity and equality guidelines.
  • Are resident in Lincolnshire or the Yorkshire Humber region.

We are open to proposals for series of intertwining activities, or stand-alone events.

Payment will be in-line with current A-N artist payment guidelines.

Please read the HUSK exhibtion outline at the bottom of this opportunity and provide:

  • The title of your workshop/event
  • Run time - is this half a day, full day, or longer programme?
  • Outline - 300 words maximum
  • Equipment - what do you need to run the event, and will you provide it?
  • Material Costs
  • Promotional Activities - are you able to promote the event on social media or to a database?

HUSK Exhibition outline

‘What befalls the Earth, befalls the sons of Earth’ – Chief Seattle

The installation Husk (working title) will be an attempt to express the current human predicament of destroying the planet that supports us, knowing we are doing so, and yet ‘sleeping’ while the Earth burns.  The destruction will be symbolised by burnt tree branches criss-crossing the gallery like a scorched and partially felled forest.  ‘Sleeping’ within this structure will be the humans.  Almost husk-like in their hollowed out delicate form one might wonder if they are still alive or just the cast-off shells of something that once inhabited them.

People entering the gallery will be invited to wander in this forest, perhaps unsure as to the path through the tangle.  Their encounter with the ‘human’ forms may provoke emotion or curiosity, or discussion about how we relate to the natural environment and what our future holds for us.  It will not shy away from dread.
