HUSK (working title) is a project working with sculptor Anna Gillespie to develop a new installation based around the current human predicament of destroying the planet that supports us, through the imagery of trees. Gallery Steel Rooms seeks expressions of interest from writers and artist researchers to develop research and material for publication to support the project.

HUSK (working title) is a project working with sculptor Anna Gillespie to develop a new installation based around the current human predicament of destroying the planet that supports us, through the imagery of trees.

From January 2019, Anna will be working on a large-scale installation site-specific to Gallery Steel Rooms. Her focus will be centered on the environment, expressed through imagery of burnt branches and humans as 'husks', cradled by the trees that protect us.

Working with environmental and ecological partners, GSR aim to develop a catalogue and programme of educational activities to support the project and promote this aspect of the earth's plight through art, writing and research.

GSR are working towards the funding of the project and seeking:

1 - expressions of interest from writers and researchers with a strong background in environmental issues and ecology to develop research and writing for a critically engaged catalogue to accompany the work.

2- expressions of interst from artists, researchers and writers to develop a body of research in relation to sculpture and the environment to be included in a critically engaged catalogue to accompany the work.

Both successful applicants will also have the opportunity to take part in a talk event and/or educational activities.

The project begins January 2019 with publication going to print June 2019.

Indicative commission fee £1500 plus some expenses.

Applicants must:

  • have a proven practice, demonstrable through the application process.
  • be prepared to travel as necessary - current likelihood is Lincolnshire, Wiltshire and Somerset.
  • work with Gallery Steel Rooms and project partners to develop an informed and professional mode of conduct in the field and working with others where necessary.
  • provide a 500-word proposal outlining your areas of interest and how you intend to develop a body of research resulting in a critically informed essay for the catalogue and accompanying exhibition texts.

Please note that the project and commission opportunity is subject to the success of GSR fundraising activities.
