Deadline: 05/06/2022Jenna Fox
Dada through to Surrealism open call for Artist/writers/curators… We what to see your work be that art, writing or curation that incorporates the ideas of Dada or surrealism, although these two movements are different, we want to use both as one followed and influenced the other…
Surrealism is a movement that developed out of Dada; this movement was also greatly influenced by Freud's theories on ego, superego, and Identity. This influence of Freudian theories can be identified as the main difference between Dada and Surrealism.
Dadaism and Surrealism are the two important art movements of the early 20th century. These avant-garde movements had a profound worldwide influence on contemporary art, culture, and literature.
These two significant trends laid the foundation of Modernism as well as other movements in art, literature, and philosophy. Even though a significant number of Dada artists converted to surrealism, the two movements were very different from each other.
Dada is an artistic movement that flouted conventional aesthetic and cultural values by producing works marked by nonsense, travesty, and incongruity, though,
Collages – pasting pieces of paper items such as maps, tickets, etc.
Photomontages – collages made using real photographs
Assemblage – assembly of everyday objects to produce meaningful/ meaningless objects of war
Readymade objects – using manufactured objects as art
Surrealism is an artistic movement that attempts to express the workings of the subconscious and is characterised by fantastic imagery and juxtaposition of subject matter, though,
Incorporation of spontaneity
Exploration of unconsciousness and dream as a true form of reality
Expression of sexuality, violence, ecstasy, decay, etc.
Focus on the irrational, mythological, and mysterious…
