Aberdyfi Community Council are seeking an artist to create a large-scale external artwork to enhance an existing 1970’s concrete underpass that connects local amenities to the adjoining beach in our coastal Welsh village. We are seeking an artist/designer to create a striking mural or alternative wall-based work for a large concrete underpass area comprising 2 walls [floor and ceiling optional]. The covered walkway measures 10.5m long x 3.25m wide with a ceiling height of 2m.

Situated on the picturesque Cambrian Coastline, Aberdyfi is a coastal village with a rich history and dramatic landscape which we are asking applicants to respond to the link in this opportunity.

Aberdyfi Community Council are investing in public spaces in a bid to create welcoming and safe areas for both local people and tourists. We seek an artist/designer whose work will complement the beauty of our surroundings. Themes of environmental sustainability and celebration of our community, tourism and heritage are at the heart of this commission.

The chosen artist will have to have strongly demonstrated how they plan to create their designs.  Despite the covered location, this is an external work and consideration must be given to the long-term durability of the piece. This must be demonstrated in the proposal. The site provides a visible location from the main road and the artwork will be a key feature welcoming visitors to the beach via this busy throughfare.

·       Given the importance of environmental sustainability in our coastal landscapes, we are particularly interested in the use of reclaimed, recycled and re-used materials.

·       Applications from Welsh artists/designers and those living and working in Wales are encouraged.

·       Applications from underrepresented groups are encouraged.

·       Applications from individual artists or collectives will be accepted but the same single payment will apply.

Plans will be finalised in consultation with Aberdyfi Community Council

The work is to be completed and installed on site at a mutually agreeable date between Mid/End May to the End of June 2022.

The commission will consist of:

·       One external artwork that will enhance the concrete underpass connecting the local amenities with the adjacent beach. Dimensions approximately 10.5m in length x 3.25m in width, with a ceiling height of 2m

Location: Adjacent to LL35 0EA

Payment

·       Successful applicants will receive a single payment fee of £3000 which will be inclusive of artists fee and fabrication and installation of the work. This sum will be payable in 2 instalments of £1,500 – one at commissioning stage and the second on completion of the approved project.

·       If applicants are located out of area support with accommodation of up to £500 will be available for the installation period.

Your submission should include:

1.     A short statement about your art or design practice to date. You might want to talk about your approach to art-making, or past projects you’ve been a part of. (300 words max)

2.     A brief proposal including a mock up image or draft illustration/design idea for the mural or alternative piece. Tell us why you would like to take part in this opportunity and what your piece will add to our area. Tell us why would you like to take part in this opportunity? What excites and interests you about the opportunity, and how you plan to deliver the requested work. Please provide a breakdown of costs for fabrication to demonstrate you can fulfil the proposal within the allocated materials and fabrication budget. (1500 words max)
