Micro-commissions for early career artists.
Deadline: 08/12/2017City: Wakefield | Region: West Yorkshire | Country: United Kingdom | The Art House
Paid opportunity
The Art House and WE ARE are collaborating to offer four micro-commissions for early career artists. With funding from Wakefield Arts Partnership and the support of The Hepworth, we are inviting proposals from individual artists or artist collaborations based in Wakefield and West Yorkshire. The work will be showcased at the Wakefield Artwalk on 31 January 2018.
We would like the proposals to act as a Pilot project for a future Sculpture Fringe, which will run alongside and as a counterpoint to the Hepworth Prize for Sculpture, a biennial prize which launched in 2016, so we are particularly interested in sculpture and work which deals with sculpture, though we are open to proposals for work in any medium and form.
We would like to see proposals which reveal the hidden stories of Wakefield, and which are located in or respond to the city. We are interested in exploring the state and status of public sculpture, in the overlooked and the un-commemorated, and in artists’ potential to reveal and unearth hidden meaning or to create new meanings in a site, whether it be a public space or building that you think is significant, or an Artwalk venue.
What We Are Offering:
· A total budget of £250
· Studio and work space at The Art House and potentially at Crux
· Access to group crits and mentoring from Art House, WE ARE, curatorial staff from The Hepworth
· The potential to work alongside The Art House Solo Artist in Residence, Rich White (http://www.counterwork.co.uk)
· Support with your artist’s statement, applying for funding and other practical aspects of developing as an artist
· A public showing of your work as part of the January Artwalk

WE ARE’s projects:
Wood Street Studios: July 2016
Details of project mentioned in proposal above.
Festiv_alt: Christmas Market: December 2016
In December 2016 WE ARE facilitated a Christmas Market with somewhereto_ in 5 empty shops on Wood Street in Wakefield. The market, funded by somewhereto_ and the Big Lottery offered young people aged 16-25 free stall space on the day. Stall holders included emerging artists and crafts people, musicians and start-up businesses. The project was a fantastic opportunity for the young people to showcase themselves and sell their work, with over £2000 being spent at the market, and attracted over 600 people in 5 hours to Wood Street.
The Flash Residency Project: 14 October 2015 (The Ridings, Wakefield)
Run by WE ARE and Paula Varjack, Commissioned by Beam
The Flash Residency Project was a series of 1 hour artist residencies. 4 Local artists of diverse disciplines inhabited a two meter square transparent gallery space designed by WE ARE, and had only one hour to create a new piece of work, whilst being watched by the public. WE ARE managed an open call for the project and marketed the event as part of Beam’s playful cities commission. The project being in a shopping centre was a great success, attracting people to watch and engage with the artists in the space throughout the day.
The Art House Micro Residencies, Autumn 2016, in collaboration with WE ARE
Early career, Wakefield based artists Rosemary Booth, Lisa-Marie Dickinson, Amy Hall and Jessica Kendall were selected to take part in micro residencies at TAH during Autumn 2016 and were given the opportunity to exhibit work as part of Artwalk Wakefield.
