You should:
- Be a professional visual or applied artist committed to the making and selling of high quality contemporary art or craft. Emerging and new artists are encouraged to apply
- Be engaged in current practice consistent with professional status and be able to demonstrate good technical ability to that standard
-Have an accessible workspace, or be able to collaborate with another artist/maker who has a studio space (NYOS can help find artists to share studio space), or identify an appropriate alternative space.
When is the deadline?
Midnight, 30th September 2021
How much does it cost?
We charge £150 for successful applications. Emerging artists (within 2 years) pay a reduced fee of £75.

Artists pay a commission of 5% on their sales over £250.

NYOS is a not-for-profit event meaning all application and commission fees are used to cover the running costs of the event.
Do I need to have my own studio?
No. If your creative space is not suitable for visitors you can share with another NYOS artist, but please be aware that they also need to be selected. NYOS can help artists who don’t have their own studio space by finding other shared venues or studios for them to use. A suitable venue must be finalised by 14th November 2021.
How do you choose applications?
We employ a selection panel to choose our artists.
Please note that the organisers of NYOS have no input into the decisions made by the independent selection panel.

Artists may ask for feedback on their submission, but we will only be able to provide this where the panel have stated specific reasons.
What criteria are applications assessed on?
- Quality of the applicant’s work
- Contemporary nature of the work
- Image quality (professional in style and print ready for use in the brochure and other promotional purposes)

Decisions are made entirely on the information submitted in this application.
Artists who submit poor quality images are unlikely to be selected.
Can artists from York apply?
North Yorkshire Open Studios and York Open Studios are in agreement that artists can only take part in one event. This is to keep our separate shows varied and fresh for the public. We encourage you to apply for both events if eligible, but if you are selected for both you must make a decision which you will exhibit with by 31st October.
Do I have to attend any meetings?
Yes, you must attend your local regional meeting (Dales, Central, Moors & Coast) at the beginning of April (dates tbc).
The meeting:
- will cover important information about the event.
- gives you the opportunity to meet with your fellow local exhibitors and discuss group activities for promotion.
- allows people who have exhibited before to share useful tips on how to make the most of NYOS.
- will be when we distribute your allocated print (brochure, flyers, posters, directional signs)
What publicity will be provided as part of the opportunity?
We produce a high quality brochure that is distributed to our extensive mailing list and at venues across the region. Each artist has a profile listing in the brochure and also on our website. You can view the 2021 artist profile pages here: https://www.nyos.org.uk/artists/
We employ a PR agency who secure significant press and magazine coverage and all artists are showcased across our social media channels.
