Ubuntu - noun, SOUTH AFRICAN; a quality that includes the essential human virtues; compassion and humanity. "a person is a person through other persons." Nguni proverb. Cupola Contemporary Art is looking for artists who’s work relates to the title. This is a Christmas exhibition so submissions of suitable gift items are more than welcome as well.

Ubuntu is a complex word from the Nguni language with several definitions, all of them difficult to translate into English. The Nguni languages are a group of related languages that are spoken in Southern Africa, mostly in South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe: each of several languages share the word, and, at the heart of each definition, though, is the connectedness that exists or should exist between people.

One meaning of Ubuntu refers to behaving well towards others or acting in ways that benefit the community. Such acts could be as simple as helping a stranger in need, or much more complex ways of relating with others. A person who behaves in these ways has Ubuntu.

We are happy to receive applications now but will keep the deadline open until midnight Monday 12 October.

Selected work will need to be delivered to Cupola no later than Friday 13 November, although we can certainly accept work earlier. Feel free to submit single items, groups or collections of work.

All works should be for sale and the gallery takes commission on works sold. There is no fee for submitting works for consideration.

To work out the overall price of your work, please use the following formula:

Your wholesale price x 2.2 = retail including the VAT we have to charge. ie. £100 x 2.2 = £220.  £100 to artist, £100 to gallery £20 to HMRC.
