Emma Bolland

Emma Bolland is an artist and writer based in Sheffield, who works across writing, film, and performance.

She uses strategies of expanded screenwriting and live film narration to position script development as performance. Last year she presented at the International Screenwriting Research Network Conference: Fact and Fiction, Truth and the Real in New Zealand, and has performed film and text works at symposia including Moving Performances (University of Oxford), Future Imperfect / Imperfect Cinema (University of Plymouth), and A Feminist Space (University of Leeds). Later this year she will be presenting and performing at Critical Reinventions (University of East Anglia), and at Miss Read in Berlin.

She has published widely. Her auto-fictive essay ‘Manus’, which uses experimental writing to examine modes of screen violence is included in On Violence (2018), described by Chris Kraus (author of I Love Dick (1997), televised by Amazon Studios in 2017) as ‘a brilliant and timely anthology’. Later this year her essay and script ‘The Iris Opens / The Iris Closes’ will be published by the Journal of Film and Adaptation in Film and Performance.

Venue

Platform is a new tech and business hub which aims to showcase the work and talent of digital media artists on an LCD media wall in the building’s reception area.

The 120,000 sq ft 13-storey Platform building launched in November 2017 and is where the new three-floor Leeds tech incubator is located. Providing workspace for more than 1,000 people, it will enable entrepreneurs, tech start-ups and second stage businesses to thrive in a like-minded community, to collaborate and generate new ideas and grow within the building.

Craig Burrow, Director of Leeds at Bruntwood, said: “Platform will have a focus on tech and creative businesses and the digital wall in the reception is a great way to showcase digital talent. Bruntwood is a long-term supporter of the arts so we're passionate about supporting existing and emerging talent across the region and we also think it will create a vibrant and thought-provoking arrival for our customers and visitors to the building.

“Working with Leeds BID and East Street Arts, Platform has already become a canvas for artists with Nomad Clan’s Athena Rising on the side of the building really helping the building to stand out and bring something extra to the local community.

“Bruntwood works to put original artwork into its buildings and has long standing relationships with regional educational establishments to provide students with space to display their work, as well as working with well-known established artists.”
