Are you an artist tired of working from home during lockdown or had to give up your studio due the current the Covid-19 pandemic? This year’s Experimental Studio will be slightly different to previous years in that we are offering 2 local artists a 6-month residency period, each with their own private studio in Bamburgh House.

Due to the current global situation, this year we are looking to support two local artists meaning that for the first time the Experimental Studio will not be offered out nationally or internationally and is only open to applicants from the Tyne & Wear and Northumberland areas. Also, to qualify for the residency you must not currently have a studio outside of your primary place of residence.

Background

The Experimental Studio residencies, established in 2014, offer contemporary artists working in any discipline the opportunity to enjoy a free studio and a focused period of time working on a project of their choice to be exhibited as part of Abject Gallery’s on going exhibition and events programme; alongside the opportunity to interact on both a formal and informal basis with other artists at Bamburgh House.

2020-21 residency will include:

  • 6 months free use of a studio in Bamburgh House, Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Use of facilities and equipment in Bamburgh House (dark room, print room, kitchen)
  • Opportunity to work amongst other artists in the heart of the city of Newcastle

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Proposed use and benefit of residency
  • Relevant experience of artist
  • Locality to the studios
  • Arts Council England Let’s Create guidelines
