EMANCIPATION: “The fact or process of being set free from legal, social, or political restrictions”

We invite artists working with textiles to submit works that draw inspiration from this theme, which will form the backdrop for the exhibition.

The gallery has four exhibition spaces, which will be allocated once all the work has been selected.

One room (or two - depending on submissions) will celebrate Yorkshire’s textile history and the role of Yorkshire women in the Suffragette movement as this is the centenary year of ‘The Representation of the People Act 1918’ (reform of the electoral system). This Act was the first to include some women over 30. It would be another 10 years before the right to vote was extended to women over 21. This partial victory was the result of years of social action by the Suffragettes.

Works can be wall mounted, hangings or free standing pieces.

NB. This show had previously been scheduled for July, but we took the decision to restructure and expand the brief, enabling us to create a larger exhibition using all the gallery rooms; many thanks to those who have already contacted us - we’re delighted to have you on board.

The exhibition will open on the 28th November as part of the Wakefield ArtWalk, a city-wide event that opens the doors of multiple venues across town.
