Ellis Hall Exhibitions: The Anthropogenic Sublime
Call for artists for one year group exhibition in Ellis Hall at Hendrix College. We are looking for artists that make works in any 2-D media that represent ideas of the sublime in the Anthropocene.
The theme of the exhibition is “The Anthropogenic Sublime” which will raise questions about our experiences of the sublime in response to human causes of natural disasters. Hurricanes, floods, droughts, and tornadoes produce sublime experiences of nature being bigger than us, more powerful than us, and beyond our comprehension. But, once we acknowledge human-caused changes in the natural environment in the Anthropocene, how do we use art to express the sublimity of natural environments?
We are especially interested in works that involve expression of complicated notions of the postmodern sublime in landscape art, environmental art, ecological art areas. Works may be figurative and representational or scenic and abstract if they express experiences of the sublime in the Anthropocene.
Works with dimensions larger than 36”x36” and smaller than 72”x72” are preferred. The exhibition will take place from September 1st, 2019 through July 15th, 2020. The committee of an artist, a curator, and a philosopher will select six different artists for a total of six different works.
Ellis Hall is a building on the Hendrix College campus that houses the philosophy and religious studies programs as well as the Marshall T. Steel Center for the Study of Religion and Philosophy. Ellis Hall is a historic home with 6 places to hang pieces, two places in the first-floor lobby, two places in the staircase, and two places on the second-floor lobby.
The works will be the subject of writing in courses on Beauty, Neuroaesthetics, and environmental value by students and will be discussed by faculty, students, and visitors on campus. A culminating essay for the show will be written by Dr. James M. Dow, Associate Professor of Philosophy, whose research and writing focuses on aesthetics of art, nature aesthetics, and environmental value.
Return Shipping and insurance will be paid for by the Steel Center for Philosophy and Religion and Hendrix College.
