Gain experience of public performance and work alongside one of today's most exciting contemporary artists.

We are looking to recruit a team of volunteer performers to participate in a series of performance works by celebrated Spanish artist Dora Garcia as part of her exhibition These Books Were Alive; They Spoke to Me! at The Tetley 2 February - 23 April 2017.

These Books Were Alive; They Spoke to Me! is Garcia’s first institutional solo show in the UK. Providing a retrospective look at her career and an opportunity to stage new iterations of performance works based on texts written by the artist, collaborators and iconic literary works such as James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake.

‘These books were alive; they spoke to me,’ is a quote from François Truffaut’s 1966 dystopic cult film Fahrenheit 451 (based on Ray Bradbury’s novel of the same name). This literary reference opens up a framework for the exhibition and expanded programme, which features books about performance, and performances about books.

Dora Garcia is a contemporary artist based in Barcelona. She represented Spain at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. She has recently exhibited at The Power Plant, Toronto, Canada; Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria; Michel Rein, Brussels, Belgium and Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland. She also exhibited in the 56th Venice Biennale and (d)OCUMENTA 13 and has works in several international collections including MACBA, Barcelona; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid and San Francisco MoMA, USA.
