As an independent curator I pride myself in collaborating with artists working in a variety disciplines - including music, performance and film. I work freelance for galleries but also choose to exhibit artworks in unconventional spaces to challenge audience perception to how we value art and its new spatial given narrative, not always presented in the confines of a gallery. I am Founder of Platform Open Arts (2014), a successful cutting edge annual exhibition that engages in artists practicing in traditional, avant garde and contemporary works of art from across the UK. I work freelance for Rural Arts Courthouse Gallery in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, programming and curating group and solo shows for established artists and emerging artists graduating from colleges and universities in the Yorkshire region. I am on the committee for New Lights Art and steering group Red Dot.
I am currently collaborating with Martyn Ware a founder member of the great electronic pop groups Human League and Heaven 17 and further, founder of Illustrious company with Vince Clark (2001) www.illustriouscompany.co.uk to create a 3d soundscape at the recently renovated Wesleyan Chapel, Grove road, Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
The development of the building has been filmed for C4 (www.chapelhouseharrogate.com/c4-tv-show) The Restoration man George Clarke and his team have spent three years following the owner Mark Hinchliffe renovate the 19th century grade listed II building into a heritage of exceptional architectural space, its contents, a juxtaposition of contemporary and historical style and design.
Martyn and I are particularly interested in working with the layers of the Chapels history and its now recreated almost museum-like walk through rooms, dressed in and exhibiting a life times collection of artifacts from the UK and across the world. Our idea is to compose (a mash up) of music themed to wedding and funerals that have been inspired by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi etc. Hence set in the 50ft high atrium the music will story-tell the Chapels past - specifically communities coming together to celebrate events of both life and death.
I practice as an photographer working with a Zenit camera to create PIN-HOLE images of derelict heritage buildings and places of brutalist architecture.
